1. Find your customers

It’s become an old hat these days to talk about locating a market before building a product, but with the hardware this is especially important. It’s easy to develop and submit a web app and then close it if no one is using it. With hardware, you have inventory that is expensive to develop and store. If you get stuck with a product that no one wants, or it just isn’t moving fast enough, prepare to eat a significant portion of your original investment. Nobody wants to have to burn a lot of new electronic equipment (and cash) because they haven’t done their research.

There are a number of methods to do this. Customer interviews are certainly the most popular “lean startup” way to do this, but I’m finding there is a faster and easier way. Find some people on Twitter who reflect your intended audience. Let’s say you need to build something that makes it effortless for computers to monitor the health of their compost pile. They may want to understand the composition of the compost and the ability of the container, even if the combination is ready to be refreshed. Find some relevant Twitter accounts that talk along with other green practices. Scrape a sample of those handles (+100 is ideal) and add @gmail to it. You will get 40%-50% hit rate for these emails.

If you can’t afford to price your merchandise at 40%-60% gross, consider adding accessories for your own high-gross merchandise, or best of all, implement a SaaS model. Do you think someone could pay $4 a month to get an item that improves their lifestyle? In that case, don’t be shy about implementing a recurring revenue model.

5. Optimize cash flow and payment terms

6. Move your IoT business outside its associated home and ” clear ” consumer games

I wish I’d founded Nest, but I didn’t. Don’t fool yourself into thinking you can make a newer, better version of a current connected home product. The market is already extremely competitive: everyone and their mother are launching connected bathrooms and connected coffee manufacturers. Consider less popular (but arguably more important) software like smart waste and intelligent farming.

7. Avoid the hardware (at least initially)

This may seem counter-intuitive, but try to create the solution without building the hardware. Leverage pre-existing platforms to advertise your application within days with pure software performance. If there is enough interest, move on to the hardware.
